John Hawkins is a Managing Partner and co-founder of Generation Partners. Mr. Hawkins operates out of the firm’s Los Angeles office.
Prior to founding Generation, Mr. Hawkins was a General Partner of Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co., a venture capital firm which he joined in 1987. At Burr, Egan, Deleage, Mr. Hawkins invested mainly in telecommunications, data communications, software, and business services companies. Prior to this, he worked in the Corporate Finance Department of Alex. Brown & Sons, Inc. in San Francisco, where he advised information technology companies in the areas of financial strategy, public offerings and mergers & acquisitions. Earlier, he was a publishing research analyst covering information technology companies for Woodman, Kirkpatrick & Gilbreath an investment bank which was subsequently purchased by Hambrecht & Quist.
Through Generation and predecessor firms, Mr. Hawkins has 30 years of experience in private equity investing. Mr. Hawkins has served on the Board of Directors of 24 companies including: PayActiv – the leader in earned wage access solutions; Captivate – a digital place based media company; ZirMed – a healthcare services company focused on revenue cycle management; Leaf Group (NYSE: LEAF) – a leading online media and marketplaces company; Donuts – a domain registry, where he is a board observer; HotJobs – a pioneer in online recruiting; Westox Labs – a toxicology laboratory; Agility Recovery – a leading disaster recovery provider; High End Systems – a premier manufacturer of intelligent lighting; ShopWiki – an advanced comparison shopping search engine; P-Com – a communications infrastructure equipment supplier; thePlatform – a developer of digital content software solutions; iCrossing – a large global online advertising agency; Promatory Communications – a data communications access switch provider, where he was a board observer; and American Cellular – one of the largest independent cellular operators in the US, where he was a board observer.
Mr. Hawkins graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English with honors from Harvard College in 1982, where he was a John Harvard Scholar. He received his MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1986, where he met Generation co-founder Mark Jennings. Mr. Hawkins is a member and officer of the Young Presidents’ Organization.
